Disclaimer: I am watching Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer as I write this review…

“Twas the night before Christmas
and somewhere up north,
dear Santa was frantic –
he paced back and forth.

He had just heard some news
that he sure didn’t like:
It seemed that the reindeer
were going on strike.”

Santa’s Reindeer on Strike? How Can It Be?

GreatReinRebIt’s the week before Christmas and Santa’s reindeer are going on strike. They’re fed up with pulling the heavy, heavy sleigh and they demand some respect. What is Santa to do without reindeer? How will he get all those toys to all those good girls and boys? Well, he does the next best thing, of course. He sets out to find some other animals who’ll do the job. First he auditions some dogs, but they get too caught up in sniffing and smelling. The cats didn’t work out either, that is once they saw a mouse passing by. Then there were flamingos, kangaroos and elephants, and you can just imagine how those worked out. In the end, will the reindeer come to Santa’s rescue or will there be no Christmas at all?

Humor in Rhyming Verse with Lively Illustrations

Just the silly premise of the The Great Reindeer Rebellion is humorous on its own, but the clever rhyming verse with catchy dialog really does the trick. Can you just imagine reindeer making demands on Santa Claus? Those defiant reindeer want a sauna and real beds to sleep in rather than grass. Colorful, lovely and  humorous illustrations bring this tale to life.  The absurdity of the story is truly what makes it original, and it is one that must be read out loud.  This picture book makes a wonderful bedtime story on Christmas Eve.

A Charming Picture Book That Sums it All Up

Anyone who celebrated Christmas as a child recalls just how anxious they felt in the days leading up to Christmas. Forget about sleeping on Christmas Eve! There’s just nothing more exciting than waking up Christmas morning to see what Santa has brought. When, When, When Will it Be Christmas? captures that excitement a child feels in anticipation of the big day and the pure joy that ensues once Christmas day arrives. The beautiful book jacket is printed with shimmering metallic silver, and the 13-inch wide trim size makes a big, bold statement when you open the cover to see the wide two-page spreads inside. The illustrations, with their vibrant holiday colors are darling and have a touch of whimsy, and the sizable font is indicative of a child’s handwriting. This is the ideal book to read on Christmas Eve just as your children are going to sleep – or at least, trying to go to sleep.

Making Christmas Bright

Barron’s educational books have surely outdone themselves this year with their Christmas activity books. They are all incredibly artistic, original and fun, and I can’t imagine any young child who wouldn’t want to receive them as gifts. With this title, readers are treated to a big beautiful book chock full of fun Christmas activities, including over 1,000 reusable stickers that are meant to be placed and replaced all over the colorful activity pages. Complete an advent calendar, decorate a tree, put the finishing touches on a snowman and decorate a gingerbread house. There are so many pages of different activities, I just can’t name them all. The illustrations are so bright and cheerful, and the satiny paper they are printed on is sturdy – ideal for putting stickers on them and taking them off repeatedly.  It’s hard to believe this book’s low price! There’s endless fun in the pages of this wonderful Christmas title, and I highly recommend it for children ages four to seven. There can’t be a nicer Christmas activity book out there.

Christmas Craft: Make a Sock Snowman

Supplies needed for this project:

  • Child size clean, white sports sock
  • Child size colored sock
  • Polyester batting
  • 2 rubber bands
  • 2 thin sticks for arms
  • Fuzzy craft balls for eyes
  • Small accessories for decorations
  • Ribbon for tying on to tree
  • Hot Glue Gun and sticks (Help your kids with the hot glue gun. It REALLY hurts if you get burned!!!)
  • Scissors
  • Craft paint pens for mouth

Directions:

Take the child size white sock and stuff it with enough polyester batting to form the bottom oblong ball. Tie the sock above the bottom ball with a rubber band. Stuff enough polyester batting to form the head. Tie the top with a rubber band. You can trim off any excess sock at the top if need be. Cut off the toe of a colored sock, roll the open side into a cuff. Hot glue the sock onto head, covering top rubber band. Cut a band of the sock off and cut the side to open it into a strip. Stretch it out a bit and then tie it around the neck as a scarf. Poke a hole in each side with the tip of the scissors. Hot glue a stick into the holes on each side to form arms. Now decorate your snowman with accessories like we did here. Poke a hole through the top of the hat and string a ribbon through to tie as a hanger for the tree. No 2 snowmen should be identical. Use your imagination! We have at east 25 of these guys on our tree and we tie them to gifts. They are so much fun to make!
