clementine-blog“Clementine Rose was delivered not in the usual way, at a hospital, but in the back of a mini-van, in a basket of dinner rolls. So begins the story of a lovely little girl who lives in Penberthy Floss in a large ramshackle house with her mother, Lady Clarissa, Digby Pertwhistle the butler and a very sweet teacup pig called Lavender.”

Explore 360° Pompeii With Extraordinary Book and CD

Buried and Almost Forgotten

Pompeii and other nearby cities were buried under the rubble of Vesuvius for centuries, as olive groves and vineyards covered the cities below. In 1709 a well-digger discovered marble from a theater in Pompeii’s neighboring town of Herculaneum. Uncovering that treasure resulted in a series of more discoveries until Pompeii was excavated in 1748. The book covers both the before and after destruction eras.

“It was usual to have three couches in a dining room…Places on the couches were arranged by status. The most important guest was positioned on the left side of the central couch. The host reclined on the right side of the left-had couch. The couch on the right was for the lowest ranking guests. Diners leaned on their left elbows, eating with their right hands.”

A Fascinating Lesson in History, Culture and Architecture

Explore 360° Pompeii is a gem of a book, with pages of historical facts, illustrations and amazing photographs. Each spread includes a short introduction plus text boxes that make reading fun, perfect for the age group. Some of the pages open up to glorious four page spreads that are 38 inches wide! We learn about: how Vesuvius erupted; how the city was covered with ash and forgotten for centuries; how the city is laid out; the architecture of a wealthy Roman’s house; how the wealthy entertained and dined; details about treasures found in these homes; Roman gardens; the Forum or main square in Pompeii; bars where the poor ate and where gambling took place; how cloth was manufactured in fulleries; how bakeries were set up; public baths; toilets and water supply; theaters and gladiators. Some of the facts will absolutely astound you, and the way the Romans lived 19 centuries ago was impressive.

“The first stage in cleaning cloth was to soak it in urine. This was collected in pots, left in the street for passersby to pee into. The cloth was then washed and stamped on in bronze basins containing water and fullers earth, a clay that absorbed grease.”

3D CD Tour Makes You Feel Like You’re Right There

DSC_0003After reading the book, pop the interactive CD into your computer for a fun and educational learning experience. What child wouldn’t love that? 3D model animations take you on a meticulously detailed tour of the ancient city Pompeii, making you feel as though you are right there. Use your mouse and arrows to view all around a room, up at the ceiling and down at the floor.  The sites featured here include the Forum, House of Faun, Baths, Amphitheater, Bar and Bakery.

“The grain was ground in tall mills made of volcanic stone. The upper stone would be turned by a pair of donkeys or mules, chained on each side. They wore blinkers over their eyes to prevent them from being distracted.”

Why You Should Buy This Outstanding Book

As a former writer for luxury cruise lines, I did my fair share of reading about Pompeii. But it wasn’t until after reading Explore 360° Pompeii that I realized I didn’t have a true grasp on what it really looked like. The quality of the book alone, including its printing, photographs and drawings should be enough to make anyone want to buy it. The text is well written, fascinating and enlightening. Then add to that the phenomenal CD offering a mesmerizing 3D interactive experience that will capture any child’s attention, and you’ve got a wonderfully unique learning experience.  How the publisher can offer all this for a mere $18.99 retail price is beyond me. It’s so important that our children learn about geography and culture, and Explore 360° Pompeii is the perfect way to do that This is not your every day nonfiction book. Rather it is a book to be treasured and a testament to the quality and care that goes into Barron’s Educational titles to educate our children.

What You’ll Love About This Book

With the commercialization of Christmas, its true meaning is so often not front and center.  The Donkey in the Living Room offers readers a chance to start a wonderful new tradition to remind them what Christmas is truly all about. The stories are short, interesting and are written in catchy rhyming verse to keep your child’s attention. Your children will look forward to this special tradition all nine days before Christmas, making all the holiday festivities – from attending church to opening gifts – just all that much more extraordinary.

The Classic Christmas Story in a Compact Size

It simply wouldn’t be Christmas without reading The Night Before Christmas. This version is so compact, your children just might want to take it with them to bed on Christmas Eve. Award-winning artist, Lisbeth Zwerger, created lovely Victorian style illustrations to go along with this classic story. I love her depictions of reindeer and the fairy tale-like quality of her work. Your children will be delighted when you read this enchanting little version to them as they follow along, gazing at the pictures.

Santa’s Little Helpers

Katie’s London Christmas is one of six titles in the celebrated Katie series created by James Mayhew, with its stunning illustrations. On Christmas Eve, Katie and her brother, Jack are awaken at their grandmother’s house by the sound of a sneeze. Lo and behold! It’s Father Christmas, and he has a cold. Katie and Jack offer to help Santa, since he’s not feeling so well, so he brings them to his sleigh. Together they soar above London, seeing all the magnificent lights and sites the city has to offer, and all the while Santa keeps sneezing.  Before they know it, Katie and Jack are going from house to house, down and up the chimneys, delivering gifts for Christmas – even at the royal palace. Will they get home before Grandma finds out?

Every Child’s Dream

Every young child who celebrates Christmas has dreamed about being one of Santa’s helpers, flying high in the sky in the sleigh pulled by reindeer. Now with Katie and Jack, they can imagine that they too are helping Santa deliver gifts on Christmas Eve. Children get a lesson in geography and culture as they learn about all the highlights of London. But the real highlight of reading this book is admiring the beautiful illustrations, with the bird’s eye views of the city and the blustery snow. Katie’s London Christmas is a wonderful way to celebrate this magical time of year.

Hilarious Twist on a Old Classic

Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 8.51.14 PMOver 25 years have passed since this book was first published, and since that time it has sold close to half a million copies. The classic story of The Night Before Christmas is transformed into a southern tale, down on the bayou, and it speaks to your terrific sense of humor.  Everything that happens in Cajun Night Before Christmas couldn’t possibly happen anywhere else but on the bayou, where gators run wild. Santa is dressed in muskrat from head to toe and gators rather than reindeer pull his skiff, rather than a sleigh.

Why You’ll Love This Book

Cajun Night Before Christmas is a whole lot of fun to read aloud, but you’ve got to do it with a Cajun accent. It will get both children and adults roaring with laughter. Even if you cherish the original story – and who doesn’t? – you’ll love this creative take on the classic. Along with the hilarious text written with in Cajun dialect, are gorgeous illustrations, detailed with fantastic ink details. Illustrator James Rice took the Green-Nosed Alligator, Gaston fro the book and gave him his own series. If you’ve got a good sense of humor, this special book will put a new, hilarious spin on your Christmas.

About the  Author/Illustrator

Rice,J-bwJames Rice, in his long, distinguished career as an author and illustrator, has produced nearly fifty children’s books, among them the first of this series for Pelican, Cajun Night Before Christmas, in 1973. With more than one million copies of his books in print, he ranks among the nation’s best-selling creators of children’s books. James passed away in May, 2014.

What You’ll Love About This Book

For starters, the text is concise and cleverly written in catchy rhyming verse, and the silly story is totally original. And of course, the Image 1dialog is fitting of Talk Like a Pirate Day. The beautiful and humorous illustrations by Stan Jaskiel feature brilliant colors and offer impressive detail. I found myself going back to look at them closer after reading the book. I love classic Christmas stories, but I can also appreciate truly new creative ideas too, and this one has a very funny surprise ending that is really funny!

What a Pirate Does the Night Before Christmas

A young pirate aboard the ship, the Black Sark, does a retelling of Clement C. Moore’s, A Visit from St. Nicholas. All the pirates on board are anticipating the arrival of Sir Peggedy, the one-legged pirate with a parrot on his hat, who rides in a sleigh full of pirate goodies, pulled by seahorses. Well, Sir Peggedy climbs aboard the ship and spreads his good cheer amongst the pirates, giving them just the right kind of booty pirates come to expect for Christmas, But what about the narrator of the story? Has Sir Peggedy forgotten about his gift? Nope. He saved the best for last.
